  • Pearl River Wins Season Opener with Last Minute Layup!

CARTHAGE, Tx. — In Texas, even the wins are bigger. Pearl River (1-0 overall) kicked off the Govan‑Williams era in dramatic fashion, defeating No. 8 Kilgore (1-1) 54‑52. "Being able to come out and start it off the right way at Pearl River means a lot," Govan-Williams said. "I attribute this game to my players—their willingness to trust me as their head coach, but most importantly, their willingness to fight. We always talk about players being an extension of the head coach, and tonight, I took pride in that." In a hostile environment tied at 52, head coach Shenea Govan-Williams called a timeout to draw up a potential game-winning play. With 12.3 seconds left on the clock, the Wildcats couldn't get the shot to fall, and Kilgore got the rebound. The spotlight found the freshman Jahanna Wilson  (Jackson; Callaway) in a one-on-one situation as Kilgore passed the ball behind the defense and up court to a lone Ranger. Baptized by fire in her first collegiate game, Wilson came up big and ripped the ball out of the Kilgore players' hands.  Wilson then passed the ball out of traffic to Mattison Bell  (Philadelphia, Miss.; Choctaw Central), who dribbled up court with the clock ticking down. Bell delivered a pinpoint pass into the paint to Cy'Nara Robinson  (McGehee, Ark.).  In a scene straight out of a movie, Robinson shot the layup, and as time expired the ball went in. From there, the celebration ensued as Govan-Williams coached Pearl River to its first ranked win since November 20, 2023, against Shelton State.  "We practice that exact situation every day, whether it's 30 or 45 seconds," Govan-Williams said. "Mattison was so poised, watching the clock with six seconds left, making the big play to Cy'nara, getting her feet under her, and being so confident to make that last shot. I think that came down to what we preach every day in practice." FIRST HALF The Wildcats got off to a slow start, as Kilgore raced out to an early 6-0 lead. Bell was the first Wildcat to score in the 2025-26 campaign, hitting a jumper off a steal by Hughes, assisted by Jae'la Smith  (Vicksburg, Porter's Chapel). After that basket, Kilgore maintained their pressure and surged ahead 11-2. Pearl River responded as Hughes and Smith each hit jump shots, and Bell drained a wide-open three, closing the first quarter at 19-8. The second quarter began with Pearl River going on a 7-2 run, fueled by five points from Robinson and a layup from Wilson, cutting the deficit to 20-16. From there, the teams traded baskets until halftime, with Kilgore holding a 31-24 lead. SECOND HALF After the half, Pearl River went on another run, this time a 7-0 surge capped by a Bell jumper to tie the game at 31-31.  The third quarter remained a back-and-forth battle. Hughes led the Wildcats offensively, scoring on a five-foot pull-up jumper and a layup, as Pearl River trailed 44-41 heading into the fourth. In the final quarter, Wilson took over, scoring seven straight points to put the Wildcats ahead 52-47. The Rangers managed to tie the game, but chaos ensued in the closing moments, and Pearl River ultimately opened the season with a victory.   LEADING THE WAY Jae'la Smith  would have 16 points, going 7-10 from the field.  Madison Hughes  was next up in points for Pearl River, scoring 10 with three blocks.  Cy'Nara Robinson  was possibly the biggest name for the Wildcats, scoring 9 points and hitting the game-winner.

  • William Carey Blanked By Gold Rush

HATTIESBURG, Miss. (THN News) – The Crusaders suffer their first home loss since October 21st, 2023, as they go down 4-0 to RV Xavier (La.). Carey had the chance to go ahead early, courtesy of  Rico Duggan . Duggan found himself in possession inside the Xavier penalty area. Duggan cut onto his favored left foot and took his shot but couldn't get clean contact as the ball trickled into Breno Zanolla's arms. XU's chances early on came from set pieces, as they aimed to take advantage of long free kicks and long throws into the Crusader box. The opening 30 minutes saw little action on either side. Carey maintained control of the game with the majority of possession but couldn't create any clear chances. Xavier's defense held strong to deny the Crusaders as they attempted to catch them on the counterattack. Duggan and  Joshua Salas  were at the heart of everything Carey tried to create. Carey had a penalty shout turned down as Duggan went down under a challenge by the Gold Rush defender. The referee waived away those claims instantly. Xavier took advantage of their only shot on target in the 36th minute as they went 1-0 up. A long ball from Guilherme Domingues released Iman Ouedraogo over the top. A defensive miscue between the Carey defense and keeper  Alex Molto  allowed Ouedraogo to tap the ball into an empty net. Carey's best chance of the game through some excellent link up play in the Carey midfield. A low driven ball from  Lewis Green  found Salas on the edge of the penalty area. Salas provided a delightfully deft flick off the outside of his right foot that released Danny Mulero in behind. Mulero couldn't quite get his shot off in time as the recovering defender made the sliding tackle to deny the Crusaders. Only 8 minutes into the second half and XU had doubled their lead. Antonio Merola whipped an in-swinging free kick into the penalty from their left-hand side. Ouedraogo rose highest at the back post to head the ball in off the underside of the crossbar. Carey continued to maintain possession during the opening 15 minutes of the second half. Despite the majority share of possession, the Crusaders were unable to turn their possession into chances on goal. XU were happy to absorb the pressure and hit Carey on the counterattack. 72 minutes on the clock the Gold Rush added their third. Ouedraogo was fouled on the edge of the box on the left-hand side. XU claimed the foul was in the box, attempting to claim a penalty, but it proved unnecessary as they would score directly off the free kick. Merola hit an in-swinging low cross across the front of goal. The cross managed to sneak its way through the Carey wall, through a number of bodies, and crept into the Carey goal at the far post. 83 minutes in and Xavier thought they had added a fourth. The ball dropped to Nelson Nakayama outside the Carey box. Nakayama shifted the ball onto his left foot as he touched the ball past the defender and drove the ball low across goal into the net via the post. Nakayama's joy was short-lived as he was denied by the wave of the linesman's flag. Xavier, however, eventually got their fourth with 13 seconds remaining. Nilson Zavala's pass found John Orgah deep inside the penalty area. Orgah brought the ball under control and snuck a shot across goal and into the far post to put the stamp on their victory. Carey are back in action Sunday, September 7th as they host Indiana Tech. That game is set to get underway at 12 PM at Danny Owens Field.

  • Pearl River shows grit against Jones College

Claire Smith (Coldwater; Lewisburg) sets a ball for an attack attempt against Jones College (Karisa Watkins). POPLARVILLE, Miss. (THN News)  — The Pearl River volleyball team showed grit Wednesday afternoon, rallying from a 2-0 deficit before ultimately falling to rival Jones College 3-1. "We had a less than stellar walk-through this morning and I think we created a slow start with that," head coach Haley Chatham said. "Preparation matters. We typically prepare well and carry it over. I hope we realize when we show up unprepared, that carries over too. "Credit to Jones for keeping their foot on the gas when trouble came their way. We are going to do a better job preparing, and we are going to look for ways to make the game plan happen instead of coming up with reasons we can't next time we see them." Pearl River (6-4 overall, 2-1 MACCC) fought back early in set one, pulling even at 7-7 behind a kill from Avery Wheat (Gonzales, La.; East Ascension). The Bobcats (3-0, 2-0) answered with a dominant run to claim the opener 25-13. Set two followed a similar script, though the Wildcats highlighted the frame with a full-extension dig from Skyla Rann (Gonzales, La.; East Ascension) that set up one of many kills from Lila Willett (Chelsea, Ala.). Jones again seized momentum and pulled away for a 25-15 win. The Wildcats bounced back in the third. After falling behind 11-7, PRCC surged ahead 14-12, sparked by a Wheat kill that deflected off a block and dropped in. Willett then took over down the stretch, tallying three kills in the final five points to secure a 25-22 victory. Pearl River grabbed a 9-7 edge in the fourth thanks in part to a block at the net by Morgan Mears (Hurley; East Central) and Claire Smith (Coldwater; Lewisburg). Jones quickly regained control, but the Wildcats clawed back to tie things 17-17 on a Bobcat attack error. PRCC took one last lead at 20-18 before Jones closed the door, 25-21, to win the match. NEXT UP The Wildcats head to Enterprise, Ala., on Friday for the Lurleen B. Wallace tournament, where they will face Santa Fe and Lawson State.
