- Lady Crusaders Book Spot in Quarterfinal
PENSACOLA, Fla . – Three things are certain in life, death, taxes, & Christina Salmon scoring goals. Salmon's brace lead the Lady Crusaders to a 2-0 victory over Indiana Wesleyan in the NAIA National Tournament Round of 16. "Any game in the national tournament is hard to win." Said senior captain Lauren Jones . " We knew that coming in we would have to work hard for the full 90 minutes and I think we definitely did that" The opening 10 minutes was a cagey affair with both teams trying to feel each other out. Neither team wanted to risk too much going forward to not give anything up at the back. Both teams had chances that forced saves out the opposition keepers. Carey's best chance came from Esalenna Galekhutle as she dribbled past two defenders and fired straight at Avery Sluss from 20 yards out. Madelyn Welker had her sides best chance of the opening passages of play as her shot from just inside the penalty area forced a sprawling save from Nerea Pallas Padilla . Both Carey and Indiana Wesleyan went through spells of dominance in the first half with neither team able to grab a consistent footing in the game. The Lady Crusaders best spell came between the 10th and 25th minutes. Two back-to-back corners saw Karen Vilau nearly score directly from the corner before Ella Jefcoat headed just over at the back post from the second. Vilau nearly opened the scoring again. An excellent turn by Virginia Mesa led to her setting Vilau just inside the box who flicked the ball just wide of the right-hand post. Carey's & Vilau's next best chance came as she cut in from the left-hand side and fired a curling effort just wide. The Lady Wildcats' best chances of the half came within a minute of each other. Katelyn VanderArk drove down the left side and fizzed a ball across the six yard but, fortunately for the Lady Crusaders, their was no Lady Wildcat on hand to tap in. Less than 60 seconds later and it was VanderArk again looking to break the deadlock. VanderArk pounced on a Carey defensive mistake, and hoping to catch Padilla out of position, took an early shot from distance but fired wide. 35 minutes in and Carey broke the deadlock, courtesy of the NAIA's leading goalscorer. Some neat one-touch passing between Galekhutle and Vilau created space for Vilau to fire a ball into the feet of Salmon inside the penalty area. Salmon used her strength to hold off the IWU defender before taking a touch across her body and firing the ball past a helpless Sluss. The second half would be a story of missed chances for the Lady Crusaders as they hit the woodwork four times. Carey nearly doubled their advantage twice in the opening four minutes. Vilau and Mesa combined in the second minute before Mesa hit over and then some miscommunication between the same pair allowed a second chance to go begging. IWU thought they had found their equalizer in the 53rd minute. VanderArk again at the heart of it, drove down the right side and fizzed another ball across the six-yard box. Some excellent defending from Argentina Estrada squashed the chance and didn't allow the shot before clearing the ball from danger. Carey's first chance of the post came in the 61st minute. A Galekhutle cross found the feet left foot of IWU defender Macy Browning who sliced a clearance off her own post. The rebound fell to the feet of Salmon who was unable to turn her effort goalwards. Five minutes later it was Vilau's turn to hit the crossbar. Vilau picked the ball up 30 yards from goal, took a couple of touches and looked to lob a shot over Sluss only for it to hit the crossbar and go over. 74 minutes on the clock and the Lady Crusader's had thought they'd added to their lead. an in-swinging corner from Rocio Fernandez found the head of Salmon at the front post who flicked the ball over Sluss and onto the crossbar. Mesa managed to get her head on the rebound at the back post and forced a save from Sluss. Sluss' save tapped the ball onto the head of Livia Pertl whose header looped just over the bar. Next in line to hit the post was Alyssia Davis . Some strong running down the right-hand side allowed Salmon to square a ball across to the six-yard box. Davis, unmarked at the back post, couldn't turn her effort goalwards as she hit the post, and Carey couldn't capitalize on the rebound. With three minutes left on the clock Carey had found the insurance goal they were searching for and there were no surprises as to who got it. Just as the ball looked like it was going out for an IWU throw-in, some excellent work from Mesa allowed her to wrestle the ball from the defender and keep the ball in play. Mesa then fed the run of Salmon. Salmon drove past her defender and into the box. 1-on-1 with the keeper, Salmon took her touch around Sluss and tapped the ball into the empty net to send Carey on their way to the NAIA National Tournament Quarterfinal for the 8th year in a row. "Really proud of the girls in the way they played today." Said Head Coach Danny Owens . "Indiana Wesleyan are a tough team, and we managed to get two goals and a clean sheet. I thought we defended very well, and we just take this one and move onto the next." Jones added "We're excited about the win but now that it's done we put it behind us and focus on recovering and preparing for Thursday." The Lady Crusaders will take on the winner of Mid-America Nazarene and Columbia (Mo.) in Thursday's quarterfinal. That game will get underway on December 5th at 4 PM.

- Crusaders Struggle Offensively as They Fall to Talladega
HATTIESBURG, Miss . – The William Carey Men's Basketball dropped their third straight game, falling to Talladega College 75-59 Wednesday afternoon at Clinton Gym. "That was a tough game for us," said Head Coach Steve Knight . "Talladega played an exceptional second half and we did not respond on either end. We must get more consistent play from our team. This is two straight games that we shot terribly the first half, but our defense kept us in the game. But in the second half, we did not maintain our defensive effort. Lots to improve on for sure." Both teams got off to a slow start, but the Tornadoes took the early 11-7 lead after five minutes of play. After a pair of free throws by Makeem Roberts made it 11-10 Talladega, Ankerion Gross put WCU ahead for the first time with a three pointer with eleven minutes remaining. From there things went back and forth until with seven minutes left, the Tornadoes pulled away to a 22-15 advantage. The Crusaders continued to battle and a three pointer by Jamar Jenkins put Carey within two at 28-26 with two minutes left in the half. Over the final two minutes both teams battled on both ends of the floor with Talladega taking a 32-28 lead into the break. Coming out of the break, the Crusaders kept on battling, cutting the deficit to three on multiple occasions. However, with the Tornadoes leading 42-39 with under fifteen minutes to play used a 5-0 run to pull away for good. From there, Talladega led by as many as eighteen points on their way to victory. Cam Brown led the offense with 18 points. Makeem Roberts added 13 points with Ankerion Gross finishing with 12 points. Carey is back in action Thursday, December 5, as they take on Faulkner University in conference action. Play is set to begin at 7:30 pm at Clinton Gym.

Second-rounder Ennis Rakestraw was ruled out on Friday with a hamstring injury and he’ll miss at least three more games as well. Rakestraw was placed on injured reserve Saturday. The Lions filled his roster spot by activating cornerback Emmanuel Moseley from injured reserve. - Buck refuse to cut ways with NBA Champion Bobby Portis & will pay him $48 million because he's a fan favorite
Milwaukee Bucks sixth man Bobby Portis is a fan favorite. When his name is mentioned, words like energy and hustle come to mind. But could his time with the franchise come to an end this season? The Bucks are not meeting expectations despite heating up in recent weeks. Their lackluster start puts them at the forefront of trade talks. In some instances, it is them bringing in help around their star players. Other times, it is moving Giannis Anteokoumpo if he wants out. The Bucks are in a tricky spot as they have little to no leverage. If they want to do anything, Portis will likely come into play. Still, a recent report from Brett Siegel of Clutch Points shows they're not yet willing to part ways with him. "No team has shown interest in making a deal with the Milwaukee Bucks at this time. MarJon Beauchamp ($2.7 million) and Pat Connaughton ($9.4 million) are the two players the Bucks have made available in trade discussions in order to try and add talent on the wing. Veteran forward Torrey Craig from the Chicago Bulls is a player Milwaukee has shown interest in, sources said," Siegel wrote. Portis was a member of the Bucks' 2021 championship team after signing with them in 2020. His efforts throughout the playoffs helped Milwaukee, especially during Antetokounmpo's absence. The 2020 MVP suffered a knee injury in the Eastern Conference Finals. Portis stepped into the starting role in Game 5 of that series and had 22 points, eight rebounds, and three steals. That game ended with Bucks fans chanting his name. What Portis brings to the table does not always appear on the stat sheet, but Milwaukee appreciated his talents enough to sign him to a four-year, $49 million contract after their win. Portis is in the third year of that contract and is Milwaukee's fifth-highest paid player. The love Milwaukee has for Portis and vice versa is evident. But this business requires tough decisions. Parting with Portis may be the right move, no matter how painful it will be.

- Lady Crusaders Roll Past Mobile
MOBILE, Ala. – The William Carey Women's Basketball Team wrapped up their two-game road swing, defeating the University of Mobile Saturday afternoon at Pharr Gym. "Thought we really played well today," said Head Coach Tracy English . "We executed on both ends of the court. We also won the battle on the boards." The Lady Crusaders got off to great start in the first quarter, shooting 42 percent from the floor while the defense held the Rams to just 19 percent. After an opening technical against Mobile to open the game, Shaneal Corpuz put Carey up 5-0 with back-to-back baskets in the opening minute of play. From there Rose Warren , Kolten Blakeney , and Madelyn Ladner pushed the Lady Crusader lead to 11-1 halfway through before taking a 17-10 lead into the second quarter. The second quarter was the total opposite from the first, as it was the Rams that got off to a great start. Mobile used a 16-1 run over a seven-minute span to open an eight-point advantage. However, over the final three minutes of the quarter, WCU settled back in, battling their way back to a one-point lead on a Blakeney jumper with Leah Sutton scoring the final basket to give Carey a 31-28 lead at the break. The game went back and forth to open the third quarter with the game eventually being tied at forty with three minutes left. After converting one of two free throws, Carey's Daydria Cueves, Addyson Sherer , and Ladner closed the quarter on an 8-0 run to give the Lady Crusaders a 48-40 lead. Sherer opened the fourth with a three pointer to make it a twelve-point advantage. From there WCU extended their lead to nineteen with under six to play and never looked back, cruising to a 79-63 victory. Shaneal Corpuz led five Lady Crusaders in double figures with 20 points and 13 rebounds. Kolten Blakeney added 16 points and 12 rebounds with Addyson Sherer finishing with eleven points. Rose Warren finished with ten points and six assists while Madelyn Ladner chipped in ten points. - Crusaders Punch Their Ticket to the NAIA Final Site
HATTIESBURG, Miss. – The Crusaders punched their ticket to Wichita, Kan. with an overtime win over Georgia Gwinnett 1-0 Saturday afternoon at Danny Owens Field. A first half of very little action and few chances was dominated by fouls and physicality. Both teams tried to impose themselves physically, giving away numerous fouls and not allowing the other team to build momentum. Carey's best chances came in the space of 20 seconds. Teddy Miranda played a ball into Billy Boag 25 yards out from goal. Boag did well to turn his defender and fire a shot at goal, forcing a save from Dagoberto Romero in the Grizzly goal. The save found its way out to Roberto Rangel wide on the left. Rangel fired a cross into an open Kolby Godbolt at the back post. Godbolt brought the fall down and fired at goal, only for Romero to make another diving save. The Grizzlies best chance came off a corner midway through the half. Toufik Najem's corner fell to Evan Alvarez at the back post. Alvarez turned and shot straight into the arms of Henry Hampshaw . The second half followed the same script as the first. Both teams committing plenty of fouls, not allowing the game to flow. Neither team was able to gain the upper hand as the number of stoppages in the game never allowed either team to gain any momentum. Carey's best chance of the half came from a free kick 35 yards out. Caoimhin McConnell was brought down in the middle of the Grizzly half, setting up Joshua Salas . Salas struck the ball sweetly and sent the ball flying over the wall, unfortunately for the Crusaders the ball sailed just left of the goal. Georgia Gwinnett's best chance came from a Crusader mistake. Alejandro Contrera took the ball from the WCU defender on the edge of the box. Contrera took a touch and fired a shot just wide of the Crusader right-hand post. With the score tied at 0-0, the game was sent into overtime. Two 10-minute halves under golden goal rules. Whoever scored first wins the game. At a time where many coaches would be cautious, Coach Farrell sent a team out to go for the win early and that they did. Less than two minutes into the first overtime and Carey found that elusive goal that had avoided them in the previous 90. The Crusaders worked the ball out wide to Jamie Wynne on the right-hand side. Wynne took a touch on to his right foot and fired the ball low across the six-yard box. Boag stormed the six-yard box and bundled the ball into the back of the net ahead of the encroaching Grizzly defender. Boag's goal sent the Crusader fans into pandemonium, sending the Crusaders to the final site of the NAIA National Tournament. "So proud of the boys tonight." Said Coach Barry Farrell . "We had a great week of training. It was so important we won this game. Onto the final site now." The Crusaders now progress to the Round of 16 at the final site of the NAIA National Tournament in Wichita, Kan. They will take on Indiana Wesleyan on December 3rd, time still to be determined.
