With seconds left on the clock in the 1st half and zero points on the board with his team down by two scores, Jefferson Davis County High School Allstar Dee Darby not only rocked the stadium but saved the game for Team South in the 75th Annual Benard Blackwell North vs South Allstar Game. What looked like a typical punt return kicked in the endzone before half time turned into a 90 yard punt return touchdown as allstar Dee Darby ran from one end of the endzone to the opposite end of the other endzone in less than 13 seconds, running through the entire North Team filled with several top 3 star recruits and soon to be D1 players. Needless to say the stadium went up in flames as Darby's touchdown set the entire place on fire. Fans were screaming to the top of their lungs. Darby not only saved the game, but turned the game around for the South, giving them the spark throughout the second half they needed. We asked the allstar about his game saving touchdown and his future as a football player in an exclusive interview with Hattiesburg News. Darby, needless to say, has offers from several colleges. How many is several? How about 6 offers so far. So how did Darby feel about being Cricket Wireless player of the game? We asked him. He said it was a blessing. "Player of the game was a blessing and all the hard work paid off!" Darby said. Darby went on to say, "Coming from where I come from, we have to work for everything. I'm glad God gave me the ability to showcase what I can bring to the game I love!" Darby exclaimed. We also asked Darby about that game saving touchdown that turned the entire game around along with other key plays that helped the South finally beat the North in the Allstar Game. Darby was humble. He gave all credit to his teammates. "The great blocks from my teammates on the kick return gave me the opportunity to bring a spark in the game and after half time, we came out to handle business!" Darby said excitingly. So what's next for this allstar's future. Education and the game. "My plans are to get an education and play the game I've loved since a kid at the next level!" Darby said passionately.

Petal High School Allstar Receiver Cayden Burger win Offensive Player of the Game at the 75th Annual Bernard Blackwell North vs South Allstar Game Saturday, December 9, 2023 at Milner Stadium in Gulfport, MS. All his team needed was one touchdown to win the North vs South Allstar game and late in the 4th quarter when time was running out, Cayden caught the game winning touchdown beating several elite North defenders and scored. So how hot is Cayden Burger? All of the junior colleges in Mississippi has offered him a schoalrship to play at their school. We asked Cayden about how does it feel being named the Offensive Player of the Allstar Game? Cayden says it feels great consider the amount of talent on the field at the allstar game. " Feels great to earn something like that out of so many talented people that played, but I worked hard for it and I feel like it was God's blessing for sure," Cayden said. Cayden also talked about how it felt being the reason the South finally beat the North in the Allstar game. " It feels great to know that the hard work payed off and it showed yesterday and not even the fact I helped the south win but the fact I represented Petal well and my family," he exclaimed. So what's in the young star's future? He has his sights set on the National Football League, but he'll settle for a college opportunity for now. Cayden went on to say in the Hattiesburg News exclusive interview, "My future is to play college football. My goal is to make it to the league one day and I feel like if I continue to work hard keep my head straight I can definitely achieve it!" Cayden eager about his future under the bright lights on the national stage, but he understands it's a process. He ended our interview by saying, "I like to take it day by day so the next step is college football!"

What's New? There's a new bakery in Hattiesburg that has everybody talking and it's a place you must go and see for yourself. Nearly on the University of Southern Mississippi Campus in the Mid-Town Community, visitors can find a bit of joy from Loblolly Bakery, located on Hardy Street across from Trustmark Bank. This new restaurant is the latest edition to the Robert Saint John collection of restaurants, including Midtowner, Ed's Burgers, Crescent City, and many more. The restaurant has a vibrant new feel with bright colors, a beautiful dining experience and fresh original food that you can't find nowhere else in the world. So what does Loblolly serve? "Pastries, croissants, fresh bagels everyday, loaves of bread, cinnamon rolls, danishes, and muffins," says General Manager Serena Llyod. Serena goes on to say that the store biggest seller is its "Chocolate Croissants & Blueberry Muffins." The bakery also offer alot of sandwiches, including an unbelievable Italian cold cut sandwhich. Loblolly also offers daily specials including a daily french toast special along with daily soup & salad specials in the afternoon. Grits has also been added to the breakfast menu. Loblolly also has a 'build your own sandwich' option. What makes Loblolly different than any other place in Hattiesburg? Because it has a world renown chef, none other than Martha Foose, a James Beard award winner, serving as its head baker. Martha is the author of 3 cookbooks. Loblolly is hoping to be a place where more students can come in between classes for a quick snack or enjoy a moment with fellow students and friends as most of the staff are USM students. Serena encourages the community to come out and give Loblolly a try. It's a place like no other that appears to be destined for greatness, good vibes, and a great time.

Hattiesburg's newest shopping retailer has brought excitement to the Greater Hattiesburg Community. The discount retailer, HomeGoods, is officially open and has Hattiesburg buzzing with excitement. New store manager Stephanie Hollomon says that the store is having a hard time keeping up with the demand of the shoppers. "I've had to schedule truck deliveries 3 or 4 times a week, moving them up from their regular schedule as demand right now is very high." Todd Jackson, Executive Vice President of the Area Development Partnership says, "I think the entire community is extremely excited about HomeGoods, my wife being number one!" Jackson, representing the Greater Hattiesburg Metropolitan area's chamber of commerce says HomeGoods is an upgrade to the community. "Kudos to Sterling Properties, the owner of that center there and for recruiting HomeGoods to that space, it's a wonderful space that was previous vacated that is honestly I feel like been upgraded with HomeGoods, a highly desired retailer in the market." New HomeGoods employees talked about the wonderful atmosphere the workspace is. "It's like family here," said Natalie Barron. Barron said customer are "happy there's a HomeGoods. That's what we get all the time." Vanessa Mitchell, a new employee discussed how she thinks customers feel. "It's exciting and brand new. Everybody is excited to shop!" Mitchell exclaimed. The University of Southern Mississippi held a graduation cermoney today. Thousands of people attended the graduation as loved ones celebrated their family's accomplishments. The graduation was held at the Reed Green Colisiem. The Golden Eagles are scheduled to have another set of graduations this upcoming Spring 2024. Graduates were seen having being overcomed with emotions as many were hugging loved ones and crying tears of joy.

Hattiesburg has a new grocery store. ALDI was filled with 100's of shoppers Thursday Afternoon as Hattiesburgers filled their buggys with items after items, grabbing them from shelves, bins, and freezers. The new store is located right in front of Walmart on Hwy 98, across from Turtle Creek Mall. The store is very different from any other grocery store as 90% of items are its own brand, its secret for extremely low pricing. There are 1,000's of ALDI stores in the country and other opening along the Gulf Coast as well, including one in Baton Rouge later in December. Here's what else is different about the new store that not only has kept its cost of products extremely low, but has helped make the store very popular: You must bring your own bags to put your groceries in. If you forget to bring your own bag, you can buy grocery bags from ALDI if you need them. Many customers were taking items to their cars without bags. Sam's Club also don't offer bags either. Cashiers don't bag groceries. Infact, nobody does. You have to bag your own groceries. Shopping carts aren't a given either. If you want to use a shopping cart, you must pay $0.25. Don't worry, you get your quarter deposit back if you return the cart back to its proper place. Finally, ALDI don't accept coupons like Walmart but don't require membership like Sam's Club. Anyone can walk in and shop at the store. However, you can't price check or compare items either. All in all, customers seemed extremely excited about Hattiesburg's latest new store. It's extremely organized but you may have to do a little removing or digging around to find what you like.

The Mississippi Who's Who High School Awards- Football Edition, kicks off Saturday Evening, December 16 at 5pm in a special Pay-Per-View event featured on the FNUTL network, hosted by Mississippi's Voice of High School Athletics, Russ Robinson. There are not only categories for football players, but also for cheerleaders, bands, and the best student section too. The award show will feature stories about players, special guest appearances, exclusive interviews and more with athletes, public officials, coaches & more. Fans, family, students, community, players, and supporters have until 12:00 Noon on Thursday, December 14, 2023 to vote for the player or school they think should win a host of awards concluding this year's football season. Any player or school can be submitted to win any award or multiple awards. Anyone can vote however many times they like too. It doesn't matter if the player is a freshman or senior or whether he attended a public school or private school. The only requirement is that the student must have played this current football season at a Mississippi school. With a pool of over 50,000 athletes, 300 + schools, and 7 districts throughout the entire state of Mississippi, this year's award show is anticipated to draw at least 100,000 viewers for the historic night. Whichever school has the most registered attendees watching the exciting awards show will automatically win a $5,000 grant. Schools can use the money for whatever they choose too. The winner will be announced at the end of the awards show. Students that receive scholarships can apply the scholarships to whatever college they choose. That scholarship can be used however the student chooses for it to be used. This award show is not just about being the best in the state, but it's also about helping to send as many kids as possible to college and helping to improve local schools. Ticket sales are anticipated to be high. Obviously, the more tickets sold, the more students can receive scholarships. Anyone can watch the award show anywhere in the world as the show will be broadcasted online on the Friday Night Under the Lights platform. The platform has millions of visitors each month. Today, the Laurel High School Tornado's football team is playing in primetime at the Mississippi High School State Championship in Oxford, MS at the Ole Miss Football Stadium. The state championship game kicks off at 7:30pm against West Point High School. The weather is schedule to be raining with possible thunderstorms with temperatures around 46 degrees and wind 15-20 mph. It's setup to be a dog fight. West Point is 10-3 and haven't lost a game in 2 months, when they were defeated 27-21 by Clarksdale High School. They also lost there first two games of the season against Starkville and Louisville. They been on a 6 game winning streaking, winning their last game against Clarksdale to become North State Champions. Laurel is 8-6 but is on a 4 game winning streak lead by it's elite star quarterback, Kobe Pierce who has been dominate against teams as of late with successful handoffs, very accurate passing, and incredible running plays breaking from the pocket has kept him scoring touchdown after touchdown. Much of Laurel's success this season has relied on it's 3 star recruit Anthony Rogers, who will also be playing in the state's allstar game next weekend in Gulfport. Add that to Laurel's other 3 star recruit Rashayd McGruder who somehow catches an interception almost every game, the secondary becomes a no-fly zone as if the two defensive backs become secret service agents guarding the White House. On defense, West Point will have less than approximately 2 seconds to get rid of the ball as Laurel's elite line get to the quarterback extremely fast often time resulting in the quarter spending much of the game on the ground than on his feet. On offense, Laurel has a workhorse in its runningback, Brayden Jordan who at any given moment has proven according to his teammates that he can put the entire team on his back and carry them from first down to touchdown. All of the team's success is the result of one brilliant mind, Head Coach Ryan Earnest. Coach Earnest has preached all season his kids are some of the most talented kids in the state and outside of self-inflicted mistakes, he always knew his kids would make it to the state championship if they executed according to game plan. Now Coach Earnest is looking to restore Laurel to its glory and uplift the city's spirit.

Thousands of people overcrowd stores for the biggest holiday even to the year. The Black Friday sale which typically offers high end products at a discounted price definitely brought people out to make it one of the busiest holiday seasons in recent memory. One store on Hwy 49 in Hattiesburg, Boot Country, had 100's of cars lined up along the highway as people from all over rushed to visit one of the Pine Belt's favorite stores. The Hattiesburg Metropolitan Area has a population over 170,000 people. That was evident today as most stores had long lines and experienced an plethora of customers.

O n Friday, October 21, 2021, Darrin McGillberry was airlift from Jones County, MS to the state's capitol, Jackson, to save what was left of his life. He had crashed in a 2006 Dodge Charger he was driving. Most people, including his mom, ponder the thought of would he survive as she sat there and watched her son on life support, fresh out of 3 surgeries. His football career was over. For Darrin, that was worse than dying itself. In his community, schools, parents, teachers, teammates and friends looked to the heavens for hope, even as him mom questioned God himself. They offered thoughts. They offered prayers. They all hoped. In a comma, skilled doctors were fighting for Darrin to come out of the induced comma they put him in to ease the pain and hopefully, start breathing on his on and not with the support of the ventilator machine. His mom knew just the trick. She got the hospital remote, the old fashion kind with the sound on it, put it by Darrin's ear, and for the first time, he opened his eyes at the sound of football. Grab some tissue and watch the video as Darrin's mother, coach, and close friend tell how a community came together for the greatest comeback story in school history. It's inspiring to say the least. This year, leading Team Mississippi are multiple ESPN ranked top recruits starting with Texas A&M Commit, 4 Star Recruit, Aj Maddox, currently the starting quarterback for Oak Grove High School Warriors. Aj is no question the best quarterback in Mississippi & is arguably the Best Offensive Player in the state. He's guaranteed to set the college world on fire next year, and possibly, take over the SEC. The Warriors are currently undefeated and in their stomach of victims include non other than Alabama's Hoover Mustangs. Yes, Aj has already defeated one of the best teams in Alabama and arguably, one of the best teams in the nation on the road in Alabama a few weeks ago. However, The Alabama vs Mississippi Allstar Game will be played in Aj's backyard, not just in Mississippi, but in the quarterback's hometown of Hattiesburg, at The University of Southern Mississippi's M. One of the biggest offensive weapons is Ole Miss Rebels Commit, 3 Star Recruit Wide Receiver Sanfrisco Magee, one of the Top 10 Best Offensive Players in Mississippi , although he should be a 4 star at minimum. He's literally owned every defense he's played against and only 6 games into the season, he's has almost 1,000 yards not to mention 10 Touchdowns. He's no question a big part of the reason his team, the McComb High School Tigers, are 6-0! Sanfrisco is not the only ESPN Top Recruit playing on offense, but the Alabama vs Mississippi Allstar game will also feature 4 Star Recruit, Meridian High School's Running Back Daniel "Danny" Hill, who's ranked in ESPN's Class of 2024 Top 5 Recruits. He'll be paired with another 4 Star Recruit, Picayune's Star Running Back Chris Davis Jr. This is shaping up to be an offensive nightmare for Alabama. However, on defense things seem to get even worse. Leading the defense in the Alabama vs Mississippi Allstar Game is ESPN's #1 Ranked Recruit in Mississippi, not to mention the only 5 Star Recruit in Mississippi, Picayune Memorial High School Defensive Superstar, the unstoppable, unhuman, extremely talented Jamonta Waller. The Florida Gators Commit is a wrecking force all by himself. Extremely dangerous on defense, he can change the dynamic of any given game within a matter of seconds. If Alabama's smart, he won't just be doubled, he would be tripled at all times on every play as he's an offensive trouble maker waiting to ruin any offensive coordinator's night. North vs South Allstar Game The second biggest game for a Mississippi high school football player outside of the State Championship taking place at Ole Miss this year is the North vs South Allstar game. That all-star game will be Saturday, December 9 in Gulfport, MS at The Milner Stadium. Yes, you've guessed it, there's another Oak Grove High School star that will be featured in this all-star game as well, Running Back Tajii Burkett, one of the most explosive athletes in high school sports and who arguably has the most disrespectful touchdown celebrations in the history of high school sports, and yes, he has plenty of celebrations as it's almost impossible for him not to score once he has the ball in his hands. Although Tajii may play both sides of the ball, Oak Grove High School 3 Star Recruit Chase Pinkston doesn't need much help on defense. Simply put, Chase sank ships. He's a torpedo lurking deep in the waters, often time undetectable, unnoticeable, and unseen until he out of nowhere destroys the offense forcing the best of offensives off the field. Needless to say, Chase like many Oak Grove Warriors stars, plays both sides of the ball. He's just that talented and is a big reason Oak Grove Warrior are undefeated. Leading the south's defense is perhaps not only one of the most feared defenders in all of Mississippi high school sports, but one of the most gifted athletes in general, Laurel High School's 3 Star Recruit Anthony Rogers, who against the Oak Grove Warriors not only picked off Aj Maddox, the best quarterback in Mississippi, he also had a forced fumble, and a touchdown, not to mention countless of tackles, all in the same game. He's a high school sports superstar. He's also extremely dangerous on punt returns as well because with the slightest opening he's more than likely ending up in the endzone. The south in general is super stacked with high school stars such as West Jones's Jamarion Keyes, Quitman's Jeremiah Harris, an absolute beast who we interviewed a few weeks ago during our postgame interview with coaches and star players after the Stone vs Quitman football game, Petal's star receiver Cayden Burger who is unguardable, Hattiesburg's Tavares Wade who seem unstoppable & a magnet to the endzone, & Jefferson Davis County Jaguars' 3 Star Recruit Damyrion "Dee" Darby who is an absolute monster on defense. Damyrion is the type of player that keep offensive coordinators up at night. Yes, Damyrion's that talented. Extremely talented actually!
