- William Carey Lady Crusaders Beats UT- Southern
HATTIESBURG, Miss. – The Lady Crusaders battled through defensive and offensive mistakes to defeat UT-Southern in conference play, Friday night at the Ben Waddle Complex. Things started off well for Carey in the first set, as they opened on an 8-3 run before building the lead to 13-5. After giving up the next two points, WCU got back-to-back kills from Elaina Anderson and an ace from Katarina Vulic followed by two errors from the Firehawks to take a commanding 18-7 lead. Carey would go on to win the set comfortably 25-10, winning on three straights kills by Marcella Hermont . Carey opened the second set, taking the first point. Things went downhill and fast from there, as the Lady Crusaders found themselves trailing 9-1. Carey managed to slow the bleeding and battle to get back within four points on multiple occasions. WCU kept grinding away, and using a 5-1 run, found themselves tied at 18 all. From there the battle was on, as there were four lead changes and four ties with the last tie being at 23 all. The Lady Crusaders went on to win the set 25-23 thanks to an attack error by the Firehawks and a block by Suelen Lima and Anderson. Carey returned to form in the third set, as they built a commanding 13-2 lead to open the set. WCU would go on to build their lead to eleven points at 16-5 and just as it looked as if they had things well in hand, UT-Southern attempted to mount a comeback with a 5-0 run. However, Carey quickly shut down any thought of a rally, as they answered with three straight points and never looked back, taking the set 25-18. Suelen Lima led three Lady Crusaders in double digit kills with twelve while adding eleven digs. Elaina Anderson finished with eleven kills with Marcella Hermont adding ten kills. Katarina Vulic finished the match with 41 assists with Gabriela Maceira coming down with fourteen digs. Carey is back in action tomorrow, as they take on Blue Mountain Christian in SSAC play. Play is set to begin at 1:00 pm at the Ben Waddle Complex.
- Southern Miss & Laurel High School Have The Same Record 1-5
The University of Southern Mississippi and Laurel High School have a lot in common. Both teams have excellence talent as far as athletes. However both teams have very low fan attendance at games, which is the community way of showing its not happy with the team's performance and both teams have only won 1 out of its first 6 games. Laurel just won its first game of the season this past Friday. The tornados beat McComb Tigers 24-19 on the road. Next the tornados face Stone Tomcats from Wiggins. Laurel did have two athletes selected to play on the Mississippi All-Star team including one that's a Danny Dozen. Southern Miss has ample talent at various positions as well, from quarterbacks to receivers and has an all-star defense consisting of NFL potential defensive backs. This weekend, Southern Miss lost 13-23 against Louisiana Ragin Cajuns. In USM most recent lost it had only 1 out of 8 third down conversions compared to Louisiana's 7 out of 16. Look at 1st downs. Louisiana had more than double the amount of first downs compared to Southern, 22 to 8. Southern had 7 punts to Louisiana 4 punts. USM had only 140 passing yards compared to Louisiana's 222 passing yards. And on the ground Louisiana's 188 rushing yards was 5 times more than the Golden Eagles 37 rushing yards. One is a high school and one is a division one college. Both are home teams. Fans are eager for either team to turn their season around.
- LJC Black History Museum Serves As A Center For Change
The Laurel Jones County Black History Museum not only works to preserve the history of Jones County, but also serves as a center for change for its community. The Hattiesburg News recently spoke with Marian Allen, the founder of the museum, about the fun things happening that could change the life of many in Laurel, MS. Recently, The LJC Black History Museum & Arts hosted a 'Meet the Candidates' event for a special election taking place this year. The Board of Supervisor position is on the ballot after Supervisor Travares Comegys resigned after he was facing charges for embezzlement/fraud. All charges against Mr. Comgegy has been dismissed, although sources say he's building a campaign to run for Mayor of the City of Laurel. Among those who participated at the event include Stacey Comegys, Travares brother, and Marlon Ulmer. Derrick Barber, who was unsuccessful in this past supervisors race, submitted a video as he is vying to win this upcoming election. The event was moderated by Darrius Combest, President of Rebuilt A Community. Aside from providing a platform in which citizens can have a voice, the museum also uplifts the non-profit sector. The museum is scheduled to have a seminar for non-profits on October 19, 2024 at 1pm. The seminar will be hosted by Gregory Ruffin. The Laurel Jones County museum has received multiple awards including the Trailblazer Award from Gamma Phi Delta, Dr. Martin Luther King Award of the Pinebelt, and the Mississippi Pinnacle Award Honoree.
- Laurel High School wins its 1st Game of the Season
Laurel High School went to McComb, MS and came away with the W. Laurel won its very first game of the season. Laurel Tornado beat the McComb Tigers 24-19. Laurel is now 1-5 for the season. Last year, Laurel lost its first 5 out of 6 games as well but went to the state championship where they were the state runner-up. Laurel's next upcoming game is Laurel vs Stone at Laurel during Laurel's Homecoming. The game which earlier was announced would be televised live on TV was themed: King of the District Rematch. However, that game will no longer be broadcast live on TV at the request of Laurel Public School District. The game would have reached over 100,000 households if broadcasted live TV. You can however still purchase tickets for the game which is schedule to kickoff at 7pm.
- NBA Legend Mutombo Dies at 58
( Associated Press ) Dikembe Mutombo, a Basketball Hall of Famer who was one of the best defensive players in NBA history and a longtime global ambassador for the game, died Monday from brain cancer, the league announced. He was 58. His family revealed two years ago that he was undergoing treatment in Atlanta for a brain tumor. The NBA said he died surrounded by his family. “Dikembe Mutombo was simply larger than life,” NBA Commissioner Adam Silver said. “On the court, he was one of the greatest shot blockers and defensive players in the history of the NBA. Off the floor, he poured his heart and soul into helping others.”
- "Road to the All-Stars" is Heading To The Gulf Coast and The Pine Belt in Back to Back Live Games
The Road to the All-Stars Show hits the road next week for a double header. The show will feature two of the biggest games in the state, Gulfport vs Biloxi and Stone vs Laurel. The Gulfport vs Biloxi "King of the Coast" Rivalry Game will be streamed live exclusively on Hattiesburg News on Thursday, October 10, 2024 beginning at 6: 30p.m. The game will be held at Biloxi High School Stadium. Early arrival is highly suggested as the game is expected to reach stadium capacity. The Stone vs Laurel "King of the District" Rematch Game will be live exclusively on MeTv on Friday, October 11, 2024 beginning at 6:30pm. The game will be held at Laurel High School Stadium. Early arrival is highly suggested as the game is expected to reach stadium capacity. It is also Laurel's Homecoming Game. Fans are encouraged to buy game day tickets from the school before the game to avoid waiting in long lines to buy tickets the night of the game. There is a lot of star power being added to the anticipated games as former NFL Star BoPete Keyes will join the broadcast team. BoPete played in both the NFL and UFL. BoPete is extremely excited to see the young Mississippi talent.

Ole Miss was ranked the #6 team in the country. They had the number offense in the country. Many experts thought Lane Kiffin probably had the best team in the SEC. However, Kentucky gave Ole Miss fits. Ole Miss was defeated by unranked Kentucky 17-20. That pushed Ole Miss out of the Top 10 Best College Football teams in the country. It was a stunner and breaking news across the sports world. Ole Miss is now ranked number 12.

The New Orleans Saints looked like they could be the new King of the NFL. However, that changed quickly Sunday as they Saints lost to the Atlanta Falcons 24-26. The Saints are now 2-2 which is not a bad record in the NFL. It's only Week 4. Next week, the Saints play the Kansas City Chiefs. The Saints have lost their last 2 games since blowing out the Dallas Cowboys.
- Alabama Roll Tide is Ranked The New #1 Team in the Country
Alabama is back as the reigning king of college football! According to this week's AP Poll, Alabama is ranked the number one team in the country ahead of Texas, who defeated Mississippi State 35-13. Although Texas has a 5-0 record, they fell to number two. Alabama is 4-0 and beat Georgia, which is not ranked #5. Beating the top SEC team in the country, Alabama rose to number 1. Up almost 30 points in the first half, Jalen Milroe looked like he was Superman taking advantage of Georgia early on. Georgia however, fought back and late in the 4th quarter, took the lead. That lead didn't last but 14 seconds as a new star was born in Crimson. 17 year old Crimson Tide receiver Ryan Williams , a 2025 recruit who reclassified to the 2024 class, not only caught in unbelieve pass, but played Dancing with the Stars with Alabama Defense after the catch, causing them to tackle each other as he scored one of the most famous touchdowns in Alabama history. Ryan caught six passes for 177 yards and a touchdown for the second-seeded Crimson Tide in their epic 41-34 victory over Georgia in a rematch of last season’s SEC title game. Ryan was the No. 4 overall prospect and No. 3 receiver in the most recent recruiting cycle, according to 247Sports' Composite rankings. Georgia again fought back hard. As Alabama fans held their breath as Georgia was poised to score only a few feet from the endzone, another freshman became a star in college football to not only save the game, but ensure Alabama victory. Fellow freshman Zabien Brown snatched a ball out of the air for a game-sealing interception.

T he Mississippi's Who's Who High School Football Awards Show, the last high school football event of the 2023 football season, was held Saturday, December 23, 2023, in Hattiesburg, Mississippi at the Mint Julep, next to the campus of University of Southern Mississippi. The premier award show was hosted by legendary sportscaster Russ Robinson. The Hattiesburg Management Group firm oversaw the management of project. The show was powered by The Hattiesburg News. The Mint Julep served as the venue sponsor. Tens of thousands of fans, recruiters, and players tuned-in to watch the exclusive pay-per-view event to see who would be named the best player in Mississippi as well as the best marching band, cheerleaders, student section, and football team. The most sought after award in sports is the prestigious "Athlete of the Year" Award. It's the highest award an athlete can receive. Along with being named the #1 athlete comes a year of bragging rights, a historical milestone, and a Lifetime Achievement Award to add to your resume that will follow you for the rest of your life. This year's recipient of Mississippi's Athlete of the Year Award is no doubt the biggest name in high school sports as both his father and grandfather not only made it to the National Football League, but both were good NFL players, which obviously seems to flow in their bloodline. There are several ESPN top country-wide & state-wide athletes that have been voted for top awards this season, as the very best players in the entire state and the very best players in their district. To make either list is extremely hard and very competitive. 99.7% of athletes in Mississippi aren't voted to be among the few that are considered to the very best in the state. - Popular Local Rapper Shot Multiple Times At Hop In Gas Station
On Sunday Morning, popular rapper who goes by the name Marlon Caine was shot multiple times at The Hop In gas station in Hattiesburg, MS. Marlon was in surgery for several hours. His condition is not known at this time. Marlon is most known for his "Trappers" song in which his music video has garnered over 100,000 views on Youtube alone. According the store employees, the shooting took place at 3:07am when a local club closed and club participants filled the gas station parking lot. Both the gas station and Boston Fish Supreme, a food eatery within the same building, windows and doors were also shot-out during the attempted murder of Marlon, according to store employees. This is a developing story.
- Cameras Identify Shooters in Main Street Shooting
The community witness violent on Main Street in the middle of the day in Downtown Hattiesburg. According to witnesses and neighbors, a white man was riding on his bike when a white Altima pulled up and shot the victim approximately 4 times. Subscribe Now: Never miss breaking news or weather. The police swarm the area, temporarily causing traffic delays in downtown. The victim who neighbors thought was killed is alive with non-threaten life wounds. Cameras caught the violence and local law enforcement released the following statement: CALL FOR INFORMATION: On Thursday, July 25, 2024, at approximately 11:30 a.m., Hattiesburg Police responded to a call of a shooting at the intersection of Main Street and E. 8th Street. When officers arrived, they discovered a male victim suffering from an apparent gunshot wound. He was transported to a local hospital to receive treatment for his injuries, which are reported to be non-life threatening. Upon further investigation, officers have identified a vehicle, a white Nissan Altima, and two persons of interest (pictured below). Keon Ray Shawn Griffin, 25, and Jasna Nicole Wright, 27, of Hattiesburg, are both wanted for questioning in connection to the shooting. Preliminary investigation findings suggest this is an isolated incident, and there is no immediate threat to the public. If anyone has any information on whereabouts of the individuals pictured below or any information pertaining to the shooting incident, please contact Hattiesburg Police or Crime Stoppers by dialing **Tips.
