- Crusaders Rout Paine College
MONTGOMERY, Ala. – The William Carey Men's Basketball Team left little to doubt, as they routed Paine College 107-70 Saturday afternoon. "Another solid effort from our team today, led by aggressive defense and rebounding," said Head Coach Steve Knight . "Our depth is a big plus and we were able to wear down our opponents in both games. We came into this Classic with a good mindset after a tough five weeks of preseason practices and it paid off with two big wins." The Crusader offense erupted in the first half, as they shot 50 percent from the floor and 43 percent from three-point range. Things were close early on with Carey maintaining the lead but with WCU up 22-16 with twelve minutes remaining in the half, the Crusaders broke the game wide open with a 22-0 run to take a 28-point lead with just under eight minutes left in the half. However, just as fast as the Carey offense got hot it went cold, as they were outscored 17-4 over the final minutes of play to take a 48-33 lead into the break. The Crusader offense found their rhythm again in the second half, as they once again shot 50 percent from the floor to run away with the game. The closest Paine could get was 13 points at the sixteen-minute mark, but Makeem Roberts promptly drained a three-point basket, and the rout was on from there, as Carey led by as many as 43 points down the stretch. Despite losing the turnover battle 16-13 the Crusaders won the rebound battle 60-26 leading to 24 second chance points. Cam Brown led six Crusaders in double figures with 24 points. Makeem Roberts finished with 15 points and ten rebounds while Chad Jones also had 15 points. Randarius Hughes chipped in 13 points with Ankerion Gross having eleven points and Javeon Gordon finishing with ten points. - Lady Crusaders Survive Late Push to Defeat Rust
MONTGOMERY, Ala. – The William Carey Women's Basketball Team improved to 2-0 on the season with a 65-62 victory over Rust College on Saturday afternoon. "I thought we managed both Stillman and Rust College's pressure defense which was relentless," said Head Coach Tracy English . "Both games were good early season tests for us and happy with the wins. After falling down 6-2, Kolten Blakeney and Shaneal Corpuz put Carey ahead 7-6 with six minutes left in the first quarter. From there both teams went back and forth until a Rose Warren jumper with four minutes left jump started the WCU offense. Over the final minutes of the quarter the Lady Crusaders extended their lead to as many as eleven before taking a 23-15 lead into the second quarter. The Carey offense continued to stay hot into the second quarter pushing their lead to fourteen on multiple occasions. But with less than three minutes left, the WCU offense went cold, and the Rust offense found their stride going on an 11-0 run to close the quarter down 37-34. Rust came out of the break scoring the first four points to take a 38-37 lead, but the lead would be short lived, as Jenna Garriga broke an almost six-minute span without a basket for the Lady Crusaders to put them back in front 39-38. From there both teams traded shots with Rust holding the largest lead of the quarter at four points before taking a 51-50 lead into the final quarter of play. The battle continued in the fourth with Rust maintaining the lead for over half the quarter but with four minutes to play a Madelyn Ladner layup put Carey ahead with Garriga following with a jumper in paint to make it 63-60. Rust would get back within one point but after Warren was fouled, she converted both free throws to push the Carey lead back to three with under twenty seconds remaining. With time winding down the WCU defense clamped down, forcing the Rust three-point attempt to miss its mark with Corpuz being fouled on the rebound sending her to the free throw line to potentially seal the victory. However, she would miss both attempts giving Rust one last chance to tie the game with one second left on the clock. But once again the Lady Crusader defense stepped up not allowing Rust to get the shot off to seal the win. Shaneal Corpuz led the offense with 15 points and ten rebounds. Rose Warren finished with 12 points while Leah Sutton and Kolten Blakeney each had ten points. Carey is back in action Wednesday, November 6, as they head to Talladega, Ala. to take on Talladega College. Tip-off is slated for 5:00 pm.
- Crusaders Come From Behind To Defeat Cumberland (Tenn.)
MONTGOMERY, Ala. – The William Carey Men's Basketball Team opened their 2024-25 season with a come from behind victory over Cumberland (Tenn.) Friday afternoon. "I am really proud of our players," said Head Coach Steve Knight . "They stuck with our game plan for 40 minutes and persevered after a slow start. We were able to wear them down late in the game and had great production throughout our lineup." After trading opening baskets, Carey found themselves trailing, as the Phoenix raced out to a 20-9 advantage in the first five minutes of the half. The Crusaders kept on fighting and managed to cut the deficit to single digits on multiple occasions, but Cumberland responded each time putting their lead back to double digits, eventually taking a 41-26 lead with just over three minutes remaining in the half. However, Carey slowed the run, and the offensive gained some momentum, closing the half on a 13-4 run to cut the deficit to just six points at the break. Cumberland came out of the break quickly pushing their lead to ten points, but WCU got five straights points off a three pointer by Cam Brown and two-point basket from Ashton Campbell to make it 49-44. From there Carey stayed within striking distance getting within three points on numerous occasions but with just under fourteen minutes to play Cumberland went on an 8-0 run to push their lead to 63-52. However, the Crusaders countered with an 11-0 run, with Ankerion Gross converting an and one to tie the game at 63 with nine minutes remaining. After trading the next couple of points, Chad Jones drained a three-point basket with seven minutes to play to give Carey their lead of the game at 69-68. Once again both teams went back and forth with each taking turns with the lead. But with four minutes to play, a Randarius Hughes layup gave the Crusaders the lead for good at 79-78. From there WCU pulled away to complete the comeback. "It was a very intense game that came down to the wire and just came down to who wanted it more," said Cam Brown . "The first half did not go our way, but we did not let that affect our second half play. We executed down the stretch which led us to come out on top in the end." Cam Brown led five Crusaders in double figures with 21 points. Zandon Haralson finished with 13 points with Chad Jones adding 12 points. Javeon Gordon chipped in 11 points while Dylan Brumfield had ten points. Carey is back in action tomorrow, as they take on Paine College at 3:00 pm in Montgomery, Ala.
- Lady Crusaders Fall to Mobile in Five Sets
MOBILE, Ala. – The William Carey Volleyball Team dropped a pivotal SSAC match, falling to Mobile in five sets Friday night at Pharr Gym The tone was set early, as to what type of match was going to unfold at Pharr Gym. The Rams jumped out to an early 9-5 lead but a service error by Mobile followed by an ace from Marcella Hermont and back-to-back kills by Elaina Anderson tied the set. Mobile quickly retook the lead but each time Carey responded tying the set until another service error gave the Lady Crusaders a 14-13 lead. From there WCU slowly pulled away to take the set 25-22. The battle continued in the second set, as neither team led by more than three points. Carey on multiple occasions held the lead but each time the Rams answered to tie the set. With WCU holding a 23-22 lead, Mobile got a kill from Layton Adams followed by an attack error from Carey to take the lead and would go on to take the set 25-23. After trading points at the start of the third set, the Lady Crusader offense caught fire going on a 9-0 run with six of the points coming off kills and two coming from blocks to take a 11-2 lead. From there Carey would cruise to a 25-16 victory. The fourth set was like the third set only it was the Rams that jumped out to a big lead. With Mobile leading 10-9, they used a 7-3 run to pull away. However, Carey battled back to cut the deficit to just two points at 23-21 but that would be as close as they would get, as the Rams would pick up the next two points to take the set and force the deciding fifth set. Once again both teams traded points at the start but Mobile slowly started to pull away to take a 9-5 lead. Carey managed to get within two at 9-7 but the Rams responded with six straight points to take the set and the match. Sofia Bettini led the attack with 16 kills. Marcella Hermont added 15 kills and 12 digs with Suelen Lima having 12 kills and ten digs. Katarina Vulic picked up 51 assists and 16 digs while Kayla Benedic had 17 digs. - Lady Crusaders Advance to Semi-Finals of SSAC Tournament
HATTIESBURG, Miss. – The Lady Crusaders booked their place in the SSAC Tournament semi-final with a comfortable 6-1 victory over Dalton State on Thursday afternoon. Despite the early kick-off, the Lady Crusaders came out all guns blazing as they opened the scoring in the 5th minute. Ella Jefcoat found Alyssia Davis inside the Roadrunner box. Davis then found the feet of Karen Vilau who drilled the ball past Brooke Alvarez in the Dalton net. Carey didn't sit back and continued to attack the Dalton goal and had their second not before long. A Christina Salmon shot was well saved by Alvarez, forcing the corner. Rocio Fernandez took the resulting corner, put it close enough to Alvarez to force her out to try and claim it. Alvarez could only flap at the ball and force it on to the head of Esalenna Galekhutle at the back post who headed home in the 12th minute. The Lady Crusaders kept up the onslaught for the rest of half but could not find their third goal. The Crusaders outshot the Roadrunners 10-0 and outscored them on corners 5-0. All WCU's pressure paid off shortly into the second half as they had their 3rd within two minutes of the restart. Salmon let fly from 20 yards out but her shot was blocked. The rebound fell to the feet of Kokona Nishikawa , who then beat her defender and fired home at the near post. 60 minutes into the game and Dalton State would muster their first shot on target, and unfortunately for the Lady Crusaders, it would result in a goal. Abigail Aman's inswinging corner dropped to Marissa Gonzalez inside the six-yard box who promptly tapped the ball home. Dalton State had a goal and a way back into the game. Dalton State had some momentum and continued the attack, going in search of another goal, hoping to cut the deficit further. Salmon put those hopes to rest as she knocked in Carey's fourth to demoralize the Roadrunners. Salmon ran on to a Fernandez through ball, blazed past the onrushing Alvarez, and knocked the ball into the empty net. The final 20 minutes fizzled out with Carey controlling possession and looking to extend their lead. Dalton State never had another sniff at goal and Carey had one foot in the semi-final. With two minutes left on the clock Zalma Torres would add another two to put the icing on the cake. Both goals mirror images of each other. Tiare Hermosilla driving down the left and Lesley Vasquez driving down the right both crossed the ball for Torres to tap in inside the six-yard box. The Lady Crusaders ran out 6-1 winners and booked their place in the SSAC Tournament semi-final. The Lady Crusader's semi-final gets underway at 1:30 PM on November 7th in Montgomery, Ala. They play the winner of Life & Middle Georgia.
- Crusaders Move On to Montgomery
HATTIESBURG, Miss. – The Crusaders punched their ticket to the SSAC Tournament semi-final as they knock off Faulkner 2-1 at Danny Owens Field. With a place in the semi-final of the SSAC Tournament at stake, both teams came out fired up and ready for a fight. The first half was a physical affair with both teams jostling for an advantage. Carey were the first team to threaten, as they had a penalty appeal turned down. Caoimhin McConnell swung a free kick from deep on the right-hand side. The free kick was put into a sea of bodies and looked like it had hit an Eagle hand. The Crusaders claims for a penalty were waived away by the referee. Faulkner put themselves in the driving seat early on as they put themselves on the scoreboard in the 10th minute. Jose Riofrio found himself in space on the right hand side, got his head up, and whipped an out-swinging cross high across the six-yard box. The cross found Caden Maldonado free at the back post who headed in to put the Eagles ahead. Carey almost equalized immediately. A cross from the right-hand side found the run of Kolby Godbolt at the front post whose deft flick scraped the bottom of the post. The first half and the Crusaders found their turning point as Faulkner were reduced to 10 men. Julio Cesar with some neat hold up play, managed to turn his defender and drive inside. Cesar's big touch forced him to lunge for the ball and lunge two footed into the feet of Leo Toro. The referee, who originally had his yellow card in his hand, consulted with his assistant referee, and changed the yellow card to a red. Cesar was forced to exit the game and forced the Eagles to play the remainder of the game with 10 men. Not long after the dismissal and the Crusaders were level. Roberto Rangel crossed the ball from the left-hand side. That cross found the feet of Billy Boag at the front post, who took a touch, and flicked past Andre Ferreira in the Faulkner net. The Crusaders controlled the remainder of the half as they held the one-man advantage. They tested Ferreira a few times, coming closest through Rangel. Two identical chances as crosses from the right hand found Rangel at the back post. Rangel took a touch and fired straight at Ferreira both times. Faulkner always looked dangerous on the counterattack but were unable to test Hampshaw. Faulkner, playing with 10 men, played more cautiously the second half. The Eagles had to make sure they did not lose the game early whilst going in search of an equalizer. Despite the cautious play, the Eagles had the first chance of the half. Faulkner won a corner in the 52nd minute. Freire whipped the corner in and fell to the feet of Maldonado. Maldonado took a touch and acrobatically got his shot off but hit it straight at the Carey defender. Carey began to take control of the game and make use of their man advantage. In the 64th minute the Crusaders turned their man advantage into the advantage on the scoreboard. Alessandro Villarreal crossed the ball from the left-hand side to the back of the six-yard. His cross found an unmarked Boag who stooped for a diving header to put the Crusaders up for good. The Crusaders controlled the remainder of the game, keeping possession and looking to add a third if possible. Carey played cautiously for the last 20 minutes, aware of Faulkner's threat on the counterattack, not pushing too many men forward and staying strong defensively. With the man advantage, and now the score advantage, WCU knew if they shut up shop at the back, they'd be able to see the result out. The Eagles waited for the final five minutes to make a last push for an equalizer. A long ball into the box found the head of Orlando Lorduy. Lorduy nodded the ball down, half looking for the goal, half looking for his teammate running in, but only found the grateful hands of Henry Hampshaw . The Crusaders saw out the final minutes of the game and held onto the 2-1 win. The Crusaders now progress to the SSAC Tournament semi-final. They play on November 7th at 7 PM. They will play the winner of Dalton State & Thomas.
- Sheriff called to remove elementary kids off football field in Jones County
J ones County Sheriff's Department was called to remove tearful kids and heartbroken parents off the football field after they peacefully marched in solidarity onto the field during an illegitimate game held Tuesday Night at Calhoun Community Center to demand answers as to why the Jones County Youth Sports Conference kicked their kids out of the Youth Superbowl schedule for this upcoming Saturday, November 2, 2024. Sign up to become a subscriber of Hattiesburg News for only $1.50 a week & get access to a variety of all our Hattiesburg News content plus follow up on this investigative story by clicking here. In an unprecedented move, The Jones County Youth Sports Conference has not only shocked, but upset the Jones County community by kicking The Roosevelt Cyclones Football Team completely out of the conference to prevent them from playing in Saturday's Youth Superbowl Game, despite being declared the winner after beating the Soso Colts on last Thursday, October 24, 2024 in the conference final playoff game. Tuesday Evening, October 29, The Jones County Youth Sports Conference held a game between The Soso Colts, who Roosevelt Cyclones just beat last Thursday eliminating the team from the playoffs and The Power Chiefs, who didn't qualify to make the playoffs, to determine who would replace The Roosevelt Cyclones in the Superbowl, making the game illegitimate. The Soso Colts lost the game Tuesday Night, October 29, 2024 to The Power Chiefs 6-12. After multiple request from the members in the community, Hattiesburg News investigated the matter and spoke with both the conference, team officials, as well as Jones County Officials. Mike Street, President of the Jones County Youth Sports Conference admitted to Hattiesburg News the Jones County Youth Sports Conference did kickout The Roosevelt Cyclones, but Street claims it was according to the rules. Street further claimed he stepped down from President to avoid dealing with the matter because of his close connections to the Soso Colts Youth Football Team, the who filed the formal complaint. The Soso Colts allegedly filed a formal complaint according to Street to the Jones County Youth Sports Conference after its lost to the Roosevelt Cyclones alleging that Roosevelt had players who were catching passes and running the ball who had on the wrong jersey numbers. Street says according to their rules, players who wear numbers 0-49 can catch passes and run the ball. Players who have numbers 50 and above can not. Soso's Football team claimed in their formal complaint that Roosevelt Football team had players wearing numbers 50 and above who were not only running and catching the ball, but also scoring touchdowns. Hattiesburg News can not verify what's in the actual complaint made by The Soso Colts. According to Street, after a team files a formal complaint against another team, the team that the complaint was filed on has 24 hours to respond to the formal complaint. However, Street says the team nor its representatives can no longer serve on the board or be a part of the decisions as to what will happen to the team who the complaint was filed on. This prevents the team from having any voice in what happens with their team's future. If found guilty, Street alleges that team will either forfeit its game or entire season. Street claimed that this is all a part of the rules in which each team is given a copy before the season starts. Unfortunately, The Roosevelt Cyclones was kicked out the conference all together. When Hattiesburg News questioned Street about what evidence if any was given to the conference that proved the Roosevelt Team violated any of the rules or a copy of the formal complaint or what all board members made the decision to kick the team out so that Hattiesburg News can verify, Street immediately hung up the phone in Hattiesburg News face and Hattiesburg News was unable to reach Street any further. For the record, as with any sport, there are referees who officiate the game. If this actually happened or if any rule was broken as with any sport, the referees could have disqualified the touchdowns and or plays and given the offending team a penalty, such as with off-sides, roughing the passer or pass interference. However, the referees did not give such penalties during the game neither did any coach or staff complain to any official during the game that any of such violations that Soso alleged in its formal complaint actually took place. The Jones County Youth Sports Conference Superbowl is scheduled to take place Saturday, November 2, 2024. Both the Jones County School District and The Jones County Board of Supervisors told Hattiesburg News they don't have any ties to The Jones County Youth Conference. This is a developing story!

- 4 Star Tristen Keys and Hattiesburg High Tigers remain undefeated at 8-0
Hattiesburg High School is one of the few teams that's still undefeated in high school sports in Mississippi. That's in part because Hattiesburg High School has arguably one of the best athletes in the country, Tristen Keyes. Although a junior, Tristen is rare and unique. He understands the defense better than most defensive players. His ability to create separation is jaw dropping. He's the definition of the phrase if you give him an inch he'll take a mile. And what's even more dangerous is after the catch as if he's a magnet for the endzone and almost untackable. He's one of the most sought after players in high school as every major D1 college would die to have him in their locker room. He alone can change the dynamic of any team let alone its success. He's a once in a lifetime gift to sports in general. With a total of 19 offers, he's been recruited by Auburn, LSU, Tennessee, Alabama, Arkansas and others. Experts think he's more than liking going to Tennessee, at least according to 247 sports which has him listed as the #1 best player in Mississippi, #4 best receiver in the country, and the #23 best player in the country. 247 Sports, On3, ESPN, and Rivals all have him listed at a 4 star recruit within the Top 3 best players in the state, the Top 15 receivers in the country, and one of the biggest high school stars in the nation. Hattiesburg News was the first publication to start talking about his rare talents and notice his one kind of skills. He's probably one of the greatest athletes in his generation.
- William Carey Volleyball Team loses a critical match
HATTIESBURG, Miss. – The William Carey Volleyball Team dropped a pivotal SSAC match, falling to Blue Mountain Christian in four sets Saturday afternoon at the Ben Waddle Complex. Both teams were dialed in from the start, with neither leading by more than two points until BMCU took a 17-14 lead. Carey quickly erased the three-point deficit to tie the set but that would be as close as they would get. The Toppers retook the lead for good with three straight points of their own before going on to take the set 25-21. The Lady Crusaders quickly forgot about the first set, jumping out to an early 8-2 advantage to start the second set. However, Blue Mountain slowly fought their way back, eventually taking a 17-16 lead. From there things were like the first set in that neither team held a lead larger than two points. But with the set tied at 24 all, the Toppers completed the comeback, picking up back-to-back kills to take the set and the 2-0 lead. Carey got off to another good start in the third set, building an early 11-5 advantage. Just like in the set before, BMCU battled to get within two points at 12-10. However, the Lady Crusaders responded with a 5-0 run and this time they would not let the Toppers back into the set, stretching their lead even further before taking the set 25-15. After a back and forth start to the fourth set, the Toppers slowly started to pull away, taking a 14-6 advantage. Carey continued to fight their way back, eventually cutting the deficit to just two at 17-15. However, Blue Mountain shut down any hope of a comeback, as they went on a 6-0 run to pull away for good.
