The University of Southern Mississippi has hired its first African American Head Football Coach to lead the Golden Eagles. Charles Huff Jr, the former head coach of the 2024 Sunbelt Conference Champions Marshall University, is the new head coach for USM.
Multiple sources confirmed the news earlier this week. The University plans to officially announce it later today.
Coach Huff and his family are new residents of Hattiesburg, MS. They have already purchased this new home in the Canebrake Community. The beautiful massive waterfront property includes part of the golf course in his backyard.
Prior to being the head coach at Marshall, he was also the associate head coach and running back coach at the University of Alabama. He is known for being one of the top recruiters in college football.
Huff lead Marshall this year to be the Sunbelt Conference champions. He finished this season with a 10-3 record. Overall, his record at Marshall is 32-20.
Huff was named running backs coach and special teams coordinator at Penn State in 2014 where he recruited and developed NFL Superstar Saquon Barkely, who then was the 2x Big Ten Offensive Player of the Year. Saquon is the running back for the Philadelphia Eagles and a top contender for the NFL's MVP.
Coach Huff was the first hire of then Mississippi State Head Coach Joe Morehead in 2018. In his only season there, the running backs ran the ball 253 times and never fumbled the ball, not once.
On September 10, 2022, Huff led Marshall to their second all-time victory over a top-10 opponent after defeating the No. 8- ranked Notre Dame Fighting Irish 26-21 in South Bend, Indiana.
