The Wake Up Morning Report: Mississippi

HATTIESBURG, Miss. (THN News) - Mississippi starts Wednesday with generally dry, warm weather. The latest official forecasts show sunshine across much of the state, while county burn bans remain a concern in several areas. In college football, Southern Miss fell to Troy Tuesday night.

STATEWIDE

Burn bans remain active. As of the latest statewide update Tuesday, county-issued burn bans included Lee, Itawamba, Monroe, Lowndes, Noxubee, Tippah, Benton, Marshall, Calhoun, Grenada, Tate, Humphreys, Jefferson, Alcorn, Carroll, Pike, Winston, Attala, Webster and Montgomery counties. Restrictions can change, so residents should check the Mississippi Forestry Commission's current list before outdoor burning.

Redistricting remains a state-government issue. Mississippi lawmakers recently completed a series of public hearings on possible changes to electoral maps. The hearings themselves did not alter district boundaries; any changes would require additional legislative action.

MISSISSIPPI DELTA / GREENVILLE

Greenville's Mayor's Youth Council has begun its new program year. City officials say the council focuses on leadership development, civic engagement and community service.

Infrastructure work also continues on Robertshaw Street, where Greenville's Public Works Department, engineers and contractors are carrying out paving improvements.

JACKSON / CENTRAL MISSISSIPPI

A major civic and journalism gathering begins tonight in Jackson. The All In on Mississippi Summit opens with an evening event at the Two Mississippi Museums, followed Thursday by discussions involving journalists, civic leaders, educators and policymakers.

The previously reported Spanish Court double homicide remains an active Capitol Police investigation. Authorities identified the victims as Jamiri Francis, 49, and Montrell Smith, 25.

HATTIESBURG / PINE BELT

Pine Belt communities held National Night Out activities Tuesday evening, bringing residents and first responders together at neighborhood events.

GULFPORT / GULF COAST

Cruisin' the Coast continues across the Mississippi Gulf Coast this week, bringing classic vehicles and visitors to communities across the region.

TUPELO / NORTHEAST MISSISSIPPI

Tupelo's Robins Street Art Stroll was held Tuesday, transforming the neighborhood into an outdoor showcase for local artists working in painting, pottery, woodworking and other media.

Organizers are now seeking volunteers for Fall Into Tupelo: Family Fun Day, scheduled Saturday, October 10, at The Depot downtown.

MISSISSIPPI COLLEGES & SPORTS

Southern Miss lost at Troy, 55–34, Tuesday night. Troy accumulated 662 total yards, including 437 rushing yards. Southern Miss quarterback Landry Lyddy passed for 316 yards and two touchdowns, but the Golden Eagles had three red-zone turnovers. Southern Miss fell to 1–4.

In SEC football, Mississippi State is coming off a 56–23 loss to Alabama.
