NASHVILLE, Tenn. (THN News) - Tennessee's handling of executions remains a major state-government story following the failed execution of Christa Gail Pike. Corrections Commissioner Frank Strada has resigned, Gov. Bill Lee has paused the state's remaining 2026 executions and appointed former U.S. Attorney Ed Stanton to conduct an independent review. Republican legislative leaders are also discussing whether Tennessee should reconsider or expand execution methods when lawmakers return in 2027.

Nashville: The Metro Council held its regular meeting Tuesday night following committee meetings covering public health and safety, government operations and other city business. Today, Metro Council districts 12 and 14 have a community meeting with Metro Water Services scheduled at the Hermitage Police Precinct beginning at 6:15 p.m.

Memphis: A contentious Memphis City Council meeting ended early Tuesday night after members postponed a decision on a proposed temporary moratorium on new data-center development until October 20.

Protesters opposed to data centers disrupted the meeting after the postponement; police responded to an altercation outside the chamber, with no arrests or injuries reported by authorities in the initial account.

The issue centers on environmental, infrastructure and development concerns surrounding large data-center projects.

Knoxville / East Tennessee: The region begins Wednesday under a stretch of dry, warmer-than-normal weather. The National Weather Service says high pressure should keep East Tennessee mostly sunny and dry through Friday before tropical moisture increases shower and possible thunderstorm chances this weekend.

Chattanooga / Hamilton County: Three people face charges following a two-day Tennessee Bureau of Investigation human-trafficking operation conducted October 2-3 in Hamilton County. TBI said the operation targeted people seeking commercial sex involving minors; seven people identified as possible trafficking victims accepted assistance from victim-service organizations. Charges are allegations unless and until proven in court.

Clarksville / Montgomery County: A debate is developing over Clarksville's finances and how local-option sales-tax revenue is divided between the city and Montgomery County. A council member has argued the city is approaching a "fiscal cliff," while County Mayor Wes Golden says changing the current revenue split would shift costs toward county residents.

Separately, multiple news sources report President Donald Trump is expected in Clarksville this weekend for an event at F&M Bank Arena, but as of the latest report the White House had not formally announced the visit, so that remains developing.

Murfreesboro / Rutherford County: Murfreesboro police reported two arrests after an automatic license-plate reader alerted officers to a stolen pickup truck. The City Schools Foundation has also awarded $56,036 in classroom grants to Murfreesboro City Schools educators.

Separately, a 19-year-old woman faces especially aggravated kidnapping and aggravated robbery allegations arising from a dispute over payment for hairstyling services; those charges remain allegations pending court proceedings.

College & university watch: Middle Tennessee's colleges and universities remain major regional employers, with a recent Nashville Business Journal analysis reporting more than 18,700 full-time staff across institutions included in its survey.

Vanderbilt ranked as the region's most selective institution in a separate analysis.
