HATTIESBURG, Miss (THN News) - The Mississippi State Board of Election Commissioners on Thursday, October 22, 2026 kicked several candidates off the ballot.

This comes as Hattiesburg News launched a special investigation into the candidates running in the race in which it was discovered some of the candidates didn't meet the state's requirements.

Within hours of Hattiesburg News investigation, the Mississippi Secretary of State's office requested candidates to verify and provide proof that they do indeed meet the requirements so that information can be reviewed by Mississippi's Governor, Mississippi's Attorney General, and Mississippi's Secretary of State.

The 3 state's highest official met in person with candidates in which Daryl McKines and Tiffany Anne Lindsey were kicked off out of the race as neither met the state's qualifications to run in the special election to replace retired Senator Juan Barnett in MS District 34 which represent Hattiesburg, Laurel, Bay Springs, Heidelberg and other areas.

Ken Keyes dropped out of the special race last week as exclusively reported by Hattiesburg News which only left 5 candidates.

Now, with the state kicking Daryl McKines and Tiffany Anne Lindsey out of the race, that leaves only 3 candidates.

Mississippi State Board of Election Commissioners has only certified the 3 candidates. The 3 candidates are Bruce Pilgrim of Bay Springs, Nellie Satcher of Laurel, and Senator Johnny DuPree of Hattiesburg.

The special election is scheduled Tuesday, December 22, 2026.

Whoever wins the special election will serve until the end of 2027.
