LAUREL, Miss. (THN News) - The first candidate to announce their run to replace retired Senator Juan Barnett since the governor called for a special election is 32 year old Daryl McKines Jr. of Laurel, MS.
In his first news interview, Hattiesburg News spoke exclusively with the candidate about who he is, why he's running, and why voters should vote for him.

Daryl, a member of the Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, talked in depth about his background, community work, his platform on running, and why he believes voters should vote for him.
He says his message to voters is simple: "Upgrade Mississippi!"
Prior to the interview, Daryl talked about continuing to build on the accomplishments Senator Juan Barnett has achieved while also leaving his mark on his community in his own way.
He also talked about the disappointment of using the old maps and erasing the work thousands of Mississippians had come together to accomplish. It's worth mentioning, Daryl also stated he will seek to run for the full senate term next year.
