HATTIESBURG, Miss (THN News) - Former Hattiesburg Judge and prominent attorney Vanessa Jones will represent the family of Demartravion "Trey" Reed, the 21 year old African American student who was found hanging from a tree on the central campus near the pickleball courts at Delta State University in Cleveland, Mississippi on Monday Morning, September 15, 2025.

"We are not willing to accept any cause of death until we have been presented all the facts, independently verified those facts through our own investigation, and determined based on evidence and witnesses what really happened to Trey."

The family will hold its first official press conference today at 4:00pm at Living Faith Miracle Temple Church of God In Christ, 1002 Rayford Street, in Grenada, MS.

Attorney Jones Law Firm released the following statement:

"On behalf of The Vanessa J Law Firm & Associates, we want to first express how heartbroken we all are about the death of Trey. We extend our deepest condolences to all of Trey’s family, friends, & classmates at Delta State University.

Insomuch, it is our job to represent this family, determine the facts of this case and to seek justice for Trey Reed.

In doing so, given the multiple conflicting accounts of how Trey died, our firm will begin by ordering an independent autopsy.

We are not willing to accept any cause of death until we have been presented all the facts, independently verified those facts through our own investigation, and determined based on evidence and witnesses what really happened to Trey.

At 4pm, we will hold the first official press conference on behalf of Trey’s family where we along with Trey’s family will be happy to answer all relevant questions."

The death of Demartravion has sparked outrage among students and community. Classes at Delta State University have been canceled for today.
